Record Numbers Ride Out With the Pros
Our health promotions team are celebrating as a record number of cyclists attended the second Ride with the Pros event of 2018, which took place in and around Grimsby on Saturday 25th August.
More than 90 cyclists, including those new to the sport, grabbed their kit and jumped on their bikes for a spin through the Lincolnshire Wolds with three seasoned pros from British cycling team JLT Condor.Former pro cyclist Dean Downing and current teammates Tom Stewart and Graham Briggs split themselves among the faster and slower paced 53km route rides as they talked to members of the public, who were interested in finding out more about the pros’ training regimes and their recent successes.
Leading the second 53km group alongside Dean was Kieran Hotson (19) who graduated from both NEL Lindsey Go-Ride and the HMT Development Team and now rides for Kingsnorth International Wheelers.
A smaller group of cycling enthusiasts, many of whom were new to the sport, took on the shorter 30km route, which still offered plenty of challenges as they made their way through neighbouring villages.
Both routes were organised by Dave Evans from NEL Lindsey Go-Ride, who hosted a cycling skills session for younger riders on the hospital’s lawns and within a cordoned off section of the car park during the main event.
NEL Lindsey Go-Ride is the younger rider section of the Lindsey Roads Cycling Club, and is a session-based training programme which helps children improve their cycling technique and boosts their confidence.
Gary Allington, Health Promotion Officer at HMT St Hugh’s Hospital, said: “Our Ride with the Pros events are really building up a following, and it was great to see so many new faces joining us this time.
“The rides offer an opportunity to cycle as part of a group where people can pick up tips and advice, as well as to meet new people with similar shared interests. “It’s also a great way for people who might be inexperienced or nervous about riding on the roads to build up their confidence.
“We really are trying to cater to everyone with these rides and would particularly like to see more newbies joining us in the future. If anyone has any queries about the next ride, I’d urge them to get in touch with me at the hospital.
“I’d like to thank Dean, Tom, Graham and Kieran for giving up their time to join us for this latest ride. I hope, by bringing together this group with the local community, we’re able to encourage more people to take up a more active lifestyle.
“A special mention must also go to Dave Evans who planned the routes and the volunteers from Lindsey Roads Cycling Club who led each group around the route safely. We couldn’t host the sessions without their continued support.”
